Hike The Roost in Evan's Notch - a short and rewarding White Mountains loop hike accessible from the Hastings Campground

Hike The Roost in Evan's Notch - a short and rewarding White Mountains loop hike accessible from the Hastings Campground

The Roost is a smaller mountain (1374') that rises above the Wild River and Hastings Campground in Evan's Notch on the New Hampshire/Maine Border. The 2.2 mile hike over The Roost in Evans Notch is a moderately challenging trek that offers stunning views of the White Mountains and is a loop hike with some road walking.

Trail Description: There are two trailheads for The Roost Trail on Route 113. We began at the more northerly trailhead and after entering the woods, steadily ascended through a hardwood forest. As you get higher, the trail becomes more rugged, but not significantly more difficult. Your effort is rewarded when you reach The Roost. Don't fear the lack of a view right at the summit, there's a short side trail to a rocky outcrop offering a view of the valley below and the distant mountains. Return back to the summit and then begin descending the southern side of the Roost. The trail descends less steeply than the northern side and after reaching the bottom of the mountain and crossing a stream, you follow an old logging railroad grade to the more southern trailhead on Route 113. The total distance from trailhead to trailhead is 1.2 miles. From here, head north on Route 113 - quickly passing the Hastings Campground - and then the more northern trailhead where you began.

At only 2.2 miles, the hike is relatively short, making it a great option for those seeking a rewarding but not overly strenuous outing - especially for campers staying at the Hastings Campground or visitors to Evan's Notch who want a short hike. The return trip is a pleasant descent, allowing hikers to soak in more of the natural beauty that defines this lesser-known gem in the White Mountain National Forest.
